The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) explored various ways to streamline the application process of the Expanded Centenarians Act (ECA) and looked into other broader areas of collaboration for Filipino senior citizens abroad.
In an exploratory meeting held on Monday, 26 January 2026, NCSC Chairperson and CEO Atty. Ma. Merceditas N. Gutierrez and CFO Secretary Dante “Klink” Ang II discussed refining guidelines on submission of requirements for qualified ECA grantees overseas.
Atty. Gutierrez highlighted the importance of creating seamless transactions to alleviate the logistical difficulties faced by senior citizens living abroad.
She also proposed a streamlined facilitation of remittances, aiming for a turnaround time of only one to two months following a senior citizens' birthday.
“Tingnan natin kung ano ang mas madali. Laging open ang NCSC on what you [CFO] can do for us and what we can do, so we can work together [for Filipino senior citizens],” shared Atty. Gutierrez.
This initiative builds upon a successful cooperation between the two agencies, which began with the implementation of the ECA Cash Gift Distribution (CGD) on 17 March 2024.
The impact of this collaboration was clearly seen throughout 2025, when the NCSC and CFO successfully facilitated the awarding of ₱10,000 to 15 octogenarians and nonagenarians, as well as ₱100,000 grants and letters of felicitation to 4 centenarians residing in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong.
This year, the agencies are set to honor 67 Filipino grantees abroad who are eligible for these cash incentives.
By leveraging the CFO’s global reach, the NCSC aims to better understand and address the specific needs of the aging Filipino diaspora and ensure that resources are aligned for the full implementation of the ECA.
This strategic partnership serves as a heartwarming reminder that "home" is always ready to take care of its own, ensuring that every senior citizen feels the gratitude of the nation they helped build. ■
