NCSC Showcases Programs for Senior Citizens to Medical Professionals

In celebration of the 9th Annual Convention of the Philippine Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (PSGG) held at Novotel Manila on 28 August 2025, Dr. Mary Jean P. Loreche, Chairperson and CEO of the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), took center stage to advocate for healthy aging.

This year’s convention gathered esteemed medical professionals dedicated to quality of life for senior citizens. In her role as a featured speaker during the Emmanuel Gatchalian Memorial Lecture, Dr. Loreche shared inspiring success stories stemming from the implementation of exisiting laws and NCSC programs across the nation.

Supporting PSGG’s theme, "Boomerang Fest: Bringing New Ideas Full Circle for Aging Well," she stated, “We want our older adults to age gracefully by safeguarding their health and well-being and ensuring their economic security. This involves not just providing cash gifts, but also offering livelihood opportunities, social inclusion, participation, and accessible government services.”

During her presentation, Dr. Loreche emphasized the importance of a collective effort in the holistic implementation of NCSC programs. She acknowledged the contributions of local government units (LGUs), public-private partnerships (PPPs), and various other stakeholders that make these initiatives possible.

NCSC has made remarkable strides by successfully implementing four transformative initiatives, including (1) the integration of health and social care, (2) regional empowerment through 16 regional offices, (3) international linkages and best practices, and (4) a call for multi-sectoral collaboration with medical societies, academic institutions, and civil society organizations.

The convention’s overarching goal is to deepen collaborative efforts within the fields of geriatrics and gerontology throughout the country. The NCSC reaffirms its vital role in bridging generational gaps and strengthening community ties for the welfare of older adults.

In recognition of her exemplary service, PSGG honored Dr. Loreche not only for her leadership at the NCSC but also for her dedication as a medical practitioner. Her heroic efforts during the pandemic in Central Visayas underscore her unwavering commitment to health and community service. ■
