ree

The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) and SM Cares officially launched a multi-year partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Monday, 21 July 2025, at SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

The initiative aims to provide employment opportunities, livelihood support, and inclusive community engagement for senior citizens nationwide.

Leading the ceremonial signing were NCSC Chairperson and CEO Dr. Mary Jean P. Loreche, Acting Executive Director Ana Marie Calapit, SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, and SM Cares Program Director Engr. Bien C. Mateo.

In her remarks, Dr. Loreche shares her gratitude for the successful beginning of the Commission’s first venture in a public-private partnership.

She highlighted that it is important for the youth to witness how the older generations continue to toil with purpose in the workforce and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

“In workplaces, like SM Supermalls and all its holdings, you have the young generations working there, and we don't want to compete with them. But we want to give them invaluable insights from people older than they are,” Dr. Loreche added.

Under the signed MOU, NCSC and SM Cares will match seniors to jobs available in SM malls and its tenants, in collaboration with the local government units, Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA), and Public Employment Service Office (PESO).

Capacity-building programs will also be provided to promote continued learning and economic participation among senior citizens, along with an annual emergency and disaster preparedness forum.

Additionally, SM malls vow to offer free venues to host Elderly Filipino Week events, livelihood fairs, and other senior-centric activities.

Engr. Bien C. Mateo shared that SM Cares is now working on identifying employment opportunities for the elderly.

NCSC is strongly committed to providing necessary guidance and support for the implementation of these socially responsible programs and initiatives.

The partnership underscores a unified approach to promoting the rights and well-being of older persons, ensuring they remain active and respected members of society.
